When I start working with companies the first thing is what keywords do you want to be ranked for. Most do not know the answer to this question and the ones that feel they know the answer are usually going in the wrong direction. The reason is most do not understand how the average person uses Google and other search engines. For example, question and answer, long-tail keywords, local search terms are just a few ways to look for an advantage. Also, making sure you are targeting keywords that have a good amount of search volume and also keywords that people use for purchase intent. For example, if someone wants to buy roses, they wouldn’t search for “roses”, they would search for “buy roses” or “buy flowers”.
